Famous for its steel production, the birthplace of Sean Bean and the snooker world championships, Sheffield is a city grounded in its industrial heritage whilst propelling forward as one of the UK’s leading cosmopolitan metropolises. The city is filled to the brim with independent businesses, each instilling a sense of pride and wonder in the local populace.
In order to promote the quality of both Sheffield, and these independent businesses, I will produce a new series of posts entitled Independent Sheffield – shining a light on some of my favourite haunts and hot-spots that are independent businesses.
Steam Yard Coffee Co.
Nestled in a cobbled courtyard, Steam Yard seems like a hipster’s paradise on first sight. Finding its home in a Grade II listed converted silverworks, the coffee shops pays homage to the city’s industrial heritage, transforming a staple of Sheffield culture into a modern oasis of coffee and cake.
The courtyard itself is a glorious suntrap, and during the heights of Summer is the perfect place to unwind with a bottle of their infamous ‘cold brew’, a bottled coffee of their own making that can’t be found anywhere else. The long, wooden benches and tables provide ample seating, as well as a chilled hideaway from the hustle and bustle just a street away.
Inside, the coffee shop is cool and trending, adorned with the work of local artists and knick-knacks aplenty. Its appearance is reminiscent of those found in Brooklyn or Shoreditch, yet with a distinctly Sheffield edge. It balances the two identities of Sheffield; the gritty, hard-working industrial city with the ultra-modern, chic urbane with effortless ease.
The selection of pastries and treats are unrivalled, boasting a variety of snacks from local Depot Bakery, and feature an abundance of doughnuts, brownies and cakes. However, these aren’t ordinary pastries, but are overflowing with flavours and fillings that elevate the eater into a form of food ecstasy – the perfect accompaniment for a mocha or iced tea.
Steam Yard is a cool, chic and trendy coffee shop that boasts reasonable prices, impeccable coffee and delectable snacks in a relaxed, comfortable environment. This is why Steam Yard is both my favourite Sheffield haunt to grab coffee, but also why they’re the first business to be featured in this series.
As if this wasn’t enough to sway you, they’ve just had a swanky new overhaul and redecorated. The cool coffee shop just got cooler.
